Whenever a major awards ceremony nears, one notices a demand to include of new categories to recognize overlooked contributions and fill the spirits of fans dedicated to specific genres.
My colleague previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, this being a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist for pushing forward since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case for why my demand stands as crucial above others. The demand is this: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Classifying creative works is not a science; it remains highly personal, and typically spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. This explains why movie academies avoid this approach. Yet it remains an essential concession in the world of gaming, showing incredible range they hardly constitute as a single art form.
For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.
Present Award Structure
The major gaming awards offer these award types recognizing Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these award types actually cover many game types, allowing placement for most games within them.
Not so for puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Consider three of this year’s best games, all very different: the architectural riddles from a specific release, intense tile-matching of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Simply put, no category fits.
Acknowledgment Issues
Numerous examples exist excellent brain-teasers released every year without proper recognition in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit award groups including Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested Indie races.
- One classic puzzle game received no recognition for anything in 2014
- Another imaginative release missed out during that ceremony
- Well-received sorting experience got ignored recently
- Only a few logic titles managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories
Importance of Logic Titles
These are often compact experiences, yet the craft of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games stand as most engaged experiences worldwide maintaining this status for an extended period.
The legendary block-stacking game competes with famous sandbox experiences for the title of best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, while interacting across multiple categories.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.
To emphasize again, these represent titles without proper classification in important events. Logic title developers function at the demanding boundary interactive creation, developing some of essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait decades.
