Wimbledon Adopts Video Replay Technology in 2025.

The Championships tennis court with replay system

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in implementing video review systems.

Video review technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Players are granted the right to challenge certain decisions made by the official, mirroring the protocol already in operation at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This technology is slated for use on the main stadium and Court One throughout the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles matches.

This move comes just a year after the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which effectively ended the 147-year role of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the umpire to re-examine other situations, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Possible interference end of a point.

Notably, there is no cap on the number of challenges a competitor can ask for.

A Recent Example

A recent example took place in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against Jack Draper.

Draper admitted it was a tough situation for the umpire, but believed his rival had "played the rules effectively."

The umpire watched a video and ruled Draper was guilty of hindrance, granting the rally to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

This technology are not exclusive to Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews in place at every one of its tournaments.

Other Changes

Another change at The Championships 2025 will be the introduction of graphical cues on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where fans have sometimes been unsure whether a shot was in or out.

Finally, with precisely a century of days to go until the start of the tournament, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
